Why Being An Artist Will Make You A Better Lawyer

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Why Being An Artist Will Make You a Better Lawyer I have posted at least some of this a few times over the years. Now that I am recruiting, I believe it is pertinent for what I will try to look for in candidates I will try to place. In a nutshell, I believe the lawyer who sees things others miss will be most valuable for a new law firm. My dad’s birthday was Saturday, March  31. If he was alive he would have been 107. He passed away in 1980. My dad was an artist, a photographer, a musician, and an entrepreneur. He loved fishing and hunting. He also loved refurbishing sports cars. I never gave him the chance to teach me to draw, paint or carve. I was too busy playing baseball, basketball, and football. He tried to teach me to play the piano, but I wouldn’t practice so he gave up. When I was a teenager, my dad frequently towed home sports cars that he refurbished and repaired in our garage and then resold. I remember the first car was a green Jaguar XK 120. He frequently tried to get me to work on the cars with him. I tried, but I got bored quickly and went back to playing baseball. Looking back now, I can say that while I was passionate about playing baseball, hunting, fishing and working on cars together are father-son experiences we could have shared for a lifetime. I missed an opportunity. Even though I never gave him the chance to teach me to be an artist, I believe my dad unknowingly taught me about art and drawing in a way that made me a better lawyer, and that is the point I want for you to get from this post. Seth Godin talks about making art. He says it has three elements: In his book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, Daniel Pink describes taking a week-long drawing class and being taught that drawing is about seeing relationships between positive space and negative space, light and shadow, angles and proportions. In a  blog posted a few years ago, Pencil as a Power Tool Daniel Pink  talked about drawing again. He said drawing: is a terrific way to develop the aptitude of Symphony, the ability to put together seemingly unrelated pieces to create something new. Through his  art, my dad taught me to see things others did not see. I became a successful lawyer in large part because I anticipated what would impact my clients.  Then I wrote about and gave presentations. One small example was when I anticipated highway construction would be changed forever by the move from awarding contracts to the low bidder to design-build, and public-private financing. I started writing about it in the 90s. I had the aptitude of Symphony. Lawyers I coached  heard me suggest many times to: That is what making art as a lawyer is all about. If you are not making art, consider taking a drawing class or a photography class and focus on relationships of things to other things. Then, diligently read business news and industry publications. Are you making art as a lawyer? If so, you can become a valuable resource for any law firm. I would love to help you find the right firm. Oh, one more thing: If your father is still alive, what experiences are you sharing? I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

5 pillars of successful employee engagement

5 pillars of successful employee engagement As the job market continues to gradually improve, employers are being held by their staff to new standards for positive and engaging workplace experiences. Gone are the days where workers held on to their jobs for dear life. Instead, employees are constantly on the lookout for better opportunities, better perks, and overall better jobs â€"and, of course, the grass is always greener on the other side. This pressure has become a catalyst for businesses to reevaluate their human resources practices and gain a deeper understanding of their employees’ needs, interests, and motivating factors. Organizations are using this information to create employee engagement programs aimed at improving workplace culture and keeping employees happy and productive. However, it can be overwhelming to understand where to start when developing engagement programs and identify which initiatives will truly have an impact. Susan Hunt Stevens, co-founder and CEO of WeSpire, a Boston-based startup that has developed a platform on which companies can run their engagement programs, says that the key to success is to develop a multi-pronged strategy. “There isn’t a single, magic solution to make all of your employees engaged and fulfilled,” says Stevens. “Businesses need to create a holistic strategy that takes into account all of the factors that impact employee engagement.” Here are the five pillars that Stevens recommends implementing when creating your strategy. 1. Manager relationships Only 10 percent of working people possess the talent to be a great manager, according to the Gallup State of the American Manager study. “It’s just not effective for companies to promote all of their top-performing employees to managers,” says Stevens. “They need to approach promotions to managerial positions as though an employee is taking on a completely new role.” Employees should first express interest in being a manager, then a training plan should be put in place to learn the necessary skills and regular check-ins with HR should be scheduled. 2. Company reputation and values Historically businesses and corporations have functioned with the sole purpose to make money, but many are now taking a step back and identifying their greater purpose in society. Articulating your organization’s purpose helps employees to see the bigger picture and where they fit in to help achieve the company goals. In fact, the leading source of professional contentment is having a sense of purpose, according to the Happiness Research Institute. 3. Sustainability It may seem an unlikely pillar for employee engagement, but the reality is that many organizations have sustainability initiatives deeply embedded in their business practices, yet they under utilize their employees. Creating programs around recycling, energy savings, or other corporate initiatives, provides a way for your employees to contribute to company-wide goals. Stevens stresses that it’s important to measure and communicate program impact and goal progress so that employees can see tangible results from their actions. 4. Physical and emotional well-being “Workers dedicate the majority of their waking hours to their companies, and now they want to see that their employers are just as dedicated to their employees’ well-being,” says Stevens. Developing programs centered around wellness shows your employees that you care about them as people. Additional programs such as mentoring and stress management provide employees with the peace of mind that their employers care about their emotional well-being too. 5. Gratitude The idea of thanking and congratulating people for a job well done seems like a simple task â€" yet it is often overlooked in the world of business. Putting in systems and capabilities for both managers and peers to be able to recognize employees for their work or share what they are personally grateful for serves as validation that their presence is important, meaningful, and that they’re a valued member of the organization. These five pillars can help structure an employment engagement strategy, but Stevens makes it clear that the challenge of managing and running engagement programs effectively should not be understated. Even with a variety of programs, what works for one employee may not work for another and growing companies face a whole new set of challenges when it comes to scaling programs. As employee engagement programs become increasingly important and complex, many organizations are turning to a new breed of technology on which those programs can be run, measured, and promoted. There’s no doubt that the workplace is changing, and any organization that is prioritizing employee engagement is already a step ahead of the rest. Whether you’re just starting to think about employee engagement or it’s been an established initiative for years, consider these five pillars, how you’re measuring success, and where there’s room for improvement. How to Choose the Right Job - Your Career Intel

The most effective method to Choose the Right Job - Your Career Intel Envision this: after numerous rounds of meetings, cards to say thanks, reference calls, and record verifications, you've been offered a stunning chance or even better, two chances. You've at last arrived at the end goal and can inhale a moan of help, isn't that so? As a matter of fact, the crucial step is simply starting. A considerable lot of the competitors I work with are so centered around demonstrating that they are directly for the job that they neglect to assess whether the job is truly directly for them. I've been an official enrollment specialist for Lucas Group for just about 25 years, and I genuinely appreciate directing my competitors through probably the most significant choices of their lives. When helping applicants pick among propositions for employment, here are a portion of the things I've found are generally critical to consider. What are the best three things that are generally imperative to you about work? Toward the start of each pursuit of employment, I suggest applicants bring a second and record the three things that are generally imperative to them in another chance. Is it accurate to say that you are really somebody who needs to be in the C-suite, or is work-life balance increasingly critical to you? Do you esteem soundness, or would you say you are prepared to take on more hazard and offer in a greater amount of the upside? Would you like to encircle yourself with serious players, or would you like to work in a cooperative and sustaining condition? Be straightforward with yourself about the main thing most. The main right answer is the one that lines up with your necessities not what society or your companions state you ought to do. When your needs are clear, it is a lot simpler to assess various chances. Advantages that look great on paper yet aren't crucial, for instance, won't be an interruption. You're likewise improbable to haggle over a couple thousand dollars on the off chance that you realize the main thing are progressively adaptable work hours or work-from-home choices. Who would you be able to go to for genuine counsel? You'll normally have a great deal of inquiries during your pursuit of employment, and it's significant that you pick the correct individuals to request help and exhortation. Your first intuition may be to counsel your guides, individuals who are progressively senior whom you regard and respect. Be that as it may, you likewise need to ensure you converse with individuals who truly realize you well and with whom you can talk openly. Is it true that you will have the option to admit to your old supervisor that you're hoping to roll out an improvement since you would prefer not to work 80 hours every week any longer? This is the place it truly assists with working with an accomplished enrollment specialist. It's in a decent selection representative's wellbeing to discover a job that is an incredible fit for you where you'll be glad in the long haul. I've followed a few competitors all through their whole professions, from staff bookkeepers to CFOs. I comprehend their inspirations, advancement objectives, and needs very well now. They additionally don't have to demonstrate anything to me or legitimize a lifelong turn. This places me in an interesting situation to offer them guidance on their next job, yet in addition on their general vocation direction. Will this activity assist you with turning out to be who you need to be in five years? The greatest slip-up I see up-and-comers make is fleeing from an awful circumstance as opposed to running towards a decent circumstance. Don't simply say yes to a convenient solution. While assessing an offer, consider where it will take you in a year, and in five years. Will the job assist you with accomplishing your objectives and desire down the line? As of late, I helped an up-and-comer assess two unique proposals for positions here in Denver. Offer A was a progressively senior title with more significant compensation, however not perfect long haul possibilities. Offer B was for a progressively horizontal job; be that as it may, it offered the open door for headway at an increasingly fruitful organization and would prompt far more prominent obligation and pay not far off. The applicant thought that it was extremely hard to turn down the more senior title. In any case, together we took a gander at what he needed to achieve in five years and inferred that Offer B was an ideal choice for the since quite a while ago run. He acknowledged the job, and he's presently certain that it was the correct choice. We invest more energy at work than we do anyplace else, so on the off chance that you are disturbed on an everyday premise, it doesn't make a difference how great the activity looks on paper. Have you had experience picking among numerous bids for employment? I welcome you to partake in a remark beneath.

This is how you can raise emotionally intelligent kids

This is the means by which you can bring up sincerely wise children This is the means by which you can bring up sincerely wise children Managing kids ain't simple. They need a debilitating measure of consideration and help. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:Behavioral clinicians have seen that preschoolers normally request that their guardians manage a need or want at a normal pace of multiple times a minute.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Most counsel on child rearing spotlights on the most proficient method to manage bad conduct. While accommodating, this is additionally much the same as just contribution guidance on the most proficient method to survive after a atomic holocaust and not discussing how to forestall one. What's the key to ensuring your lounge doesn't look like a scene from Frantic Max: Fury Road? What for the most part underlies awful conduct is the means by which the kid handles negative feelings. Also, this is something we once in a while instruct purposely and never educate well. Telling children the best way to perceive and manage sentiments forestalls bad conduct - and it's an expertise that will serve them their whole lives. It forestalls fits of rage at age 4 but on the other hand it's the distinction between setting aside school cash and setting aside bail cash later on. Take a gander at it as potty preparing for feelings. But how do we do that?Professor John Gottman is the person who reformed the investigation of connections, coming to the heart of the matter where he could tune in to a couple for only a couple of moments and decide with a startling measure of precision whether they'd separate. All things considered, fortunately, Gottman likewise broke down parenting. And this wasn't the most recent child rearing hypothesis of-the-week that someone thought of over lunch - this was a really epic investigation of psyche bowing proportions. He took more than 100 wedded couples with kids ages 4 or 5 and gave them questionnaires. At that point led a huge num ber of long periods of meetings. He watched their conduct in his lab. Taped meetings of the children playing with their closest companions. Checked pulses, breath, blood stream and perspiring. Took pee tests - yeah, urine samples -from the children to quantify pressure related hormones. And afterward caught up with the youngsters and families completely through puberty, leading more meetings, assessing scholarly execution and … Okay, enough. You get it. The plans of Hollywood Bond Villains aren't this careful. Furthermore, when it came to managing feelings, Gottman acknowledged there are 4 sorts of guardians. Furthermore, three ain't so hot: Excusing guardians: They dismiss, overlook, or trivialize negative feelings. Opposing guardians. They're incredulous of negative sentiments and rebuff kids for enthusiastic articulation. Free enterprise guardians: They acknowledge their kids' feelings and identify with them, however don't offer direction or set cutoff points on conduct. Offspring of these guardians didn't work out quite as well after some time. They got out of hand more, experienced difficulty making companions or had confidence issues. One of them might be breaking into your vehicle right now.And then there were the Ultra-Parents. These moms and fathers unconsciously utilized what Gottman calls feeling training. And this delivered sincerely wise children. These guardians acknowledged their youngsters' sentiments (however not the entirety of the kids' conduct), guided the children through passionate minutes, and helped them issue settle their way to an answer that didn't include placing the neighbor's child in the crisis room. How did these kids end up?From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:The kids were better at alleviating themselves when they were vexed. They could quiet down their souls quicker. Due to the prevalent presentation in that piece of their physiology that is engaged with quieting themselves, they had less irresistible ailment s. They were better at centering consideration. They related better to others, even in the extreme social circumstances they experienced in center youth like getting prodded, where being excessively passionate is a risk, not an advantage. They were better at getting individuals. They would do well to fellowships with other youngsters. They were likewise better at circumstances in school that necessary scholarly exhibition. So, they had built up a sort of Level of intelligence that is about individuals and the universe of sentiments, or passionate intelligence. And everything boiled down to how the guardians took care of the kid's negative enthusiastic upheavals. These guardians completed five things that different sorts once in a while did.Alrighty, how about we get to it … 1) Be mindful of emotionsParenting is unpleasant and can feel constant. Regularly dislike running a long distance race - it resembles running until you kick the bucket. So there's a characteristic propensity to check out when things are (at long last) quiet and think, Nothing is as of now ablaze. Alright, life is good. But this can resemble remaining in a coal mineshaft disregarding the a great many dead canaries. Typically feelings go before upheavals. So seeing the youngster's feelings early - and not simply the subsequent awful conduct - is critical. Not getting out of hand doesn't signify not annoyed. When a detached forceful life partner folds their arms, glowers and says, I'm fine, at least you know they're unquestionably not fine. Kids may not comprehend what they're feeling or how to best communicate it. So staying alert and seeing early can forestall Tonka trucks from taking off without FAA approval. But the issue numerous guardians have here is seeing their own emotions. In case you're not mindful of your sentiments and states of mind you'll experience difficulty seeing and identifying with those of others. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:Our reads show that for guardia ns to feel what their kids are feeling, they should know about feelings, first in themselves and afterward in their children… Emotional mindfulness essentially implies that you perceive when you are feeling a feeling, you can recognize your sentiments, and you are touchy to the nearness of feelings in other people.Don't be reluctant to show feelings before your children. Gottman found that even displeasure (as long as it's communicated deferentially and valuably) has its place. In the event that guardians keep away from demonstrating sentiments, at that point children can learn Mother and father don't have these feelings and neither ought to I.Seeing contentions and afterward observing them settled genially is far superior than never observing them at all. Kids need a good example for values, yet additionally for feelings. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:Such mothers and fathers may attempt to make up for their dread of losing control by being super-guardians, conceal ing their feelings from their kids… The incongruity is that by concealing their feelings, these guardians might be raising youths who are even less equipped for dealing with negative feelings than they would have been if their folks had figured out how to let their emotions appear in a nonabusive manner. That is on the grounds that the children grow up genuinely removed from their folks. Additionally, the kids have one less good example to show them how to deal with troublesome feelings effectively.Shielding kids from enthusiastic circumstances and afterward sending them out into the world resembles sending a competitor to the Olympics with no preparation. Children need those minutes so as to figure out how to manage their feelings.(To become familiar with the study of an effective life, look at my top of the line book here.)Notice sentiments now and keep away from an emergency later. However, what point of view did the brilliant guardians take when upheavals did occur?2) Emotion is an open door for closeness and teachingIt's reasonable to consider a to be as a nonsensical burden that ought to be wiped out ASAP. In any case, the guardians whose kids flourished considered upheavals to be showing minutes and an opportunity to bond with their child. Better believe it, that doesn't generally feel characteristic when a kid is irately tossing things.Does saying anything looking like, You ought not feel along these lines ever work with enthusiastic grown-ups? Precisely. At that point it sure as damnation won't work with your child. Saying There's not something to fear, or Goodness, it'll be fine is contemptuous. This is the manner by which children figure out how to question their own judgment and lose confidence. The Emotion-Coaching guardians understood that a fit of rage was the best time to associate with their youngster and show them an important skill.Yes, you have to stop rowdiness right away. Be that as it may, you need to do it in a path explicit to the yo ungster's activities and not make it about their personality. So you need to state, We don't paint Grandma's lounge chair purple, rather than, Quit being a bad dream! The kids who reliably heard the last didn't toll also in Gottman's follow ups. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:When we checked in with these equivalent families three years after the fact, we found that the kids who experienced such rude, derisive conduct from their folks were similar children who were experiencing more difficulty with homework and coexisting with companions. These were the children who had more elevated levels of pressure related hormones in their bodies. Their instructors announced they were having more conduct issues, and their mothers detailed they had more illnesses. It takes practice however you need to see children's enthusiastic torment like you'd see their physical torment. It's not their flaw. It's a test they're confronting. Furthermore, one you can help them with.(To become fami liar with the two-word wake-up routine that will satisfy all of you day, click here.)Okay, so you have the correct point of view. You're a passionate guide, not a prison guard. Be that as it may, what do you really never really) Listen sympathetically and approve feelingsDon't contend the realities. Sentiments aren't legitimate. You wouldn't anticipate that the new representative should realize how to discover the washroom and you shouldn't anticipate that a youngster should realize how to deal with feelings that, to be perfectly honest, you despite everything have issues managing following quite a while of experience.Don't promptly attempt to fix things. You have to build up you're

Not monitoring your mistakes can influence ability's impression of the organization. It impacts both their reactions and extreme choice to work for you. Truth be told, a 2016 CareerArc study found that 60 percent of occupation searchers have had a poor encounter while going after a position. Competitor experience majorly affects your image and friends development. Try not to pass up extraordinary workers on account of a senseless prospective employee meeting botch. Here are three specialists' sentiments on practices to maintain a strategic distance from: 1. Quit attempting to trick applicants Each position has its terrible side. There's no reason for attempting to conceal that from work competitors. They'll either detect you're concealing something or make sense of it not long after taking the activity. However numerous HR experts are concerned being straightforward will frighten individuals away, so they minimize certain negative parts of the activity. Try not to gleam things over, said Suzanne Lucas, the HR master behind the blog Evil HR Lady. Simply talk about the activity and the up-and-comer's understanding. What to do: Be forthright and legitimate. Lucas likes to tell competitors the three most noticeably awful pieces of the position and get some information about those conditions. Getting the correct individual on board implies employing the individual who approves of the most exceedingly awful pieces of the activity, she brought up. Be absolutely legit. Is it a miniaturized scale overseeing VP? Are there customers who dont comprehend the importance of the word 'end of the week'? Is the compensation low and hours long? Lay it full scale and afterward request their input. On the off chance that nothing you state is a major issue for the competitor, you can be certain of their enthusiasm for the activity and your association. Continuously be forthright and legit with up-and-comers during the #jobinterview. @RealEvilHRLady Snap To Tweet 2. Listen more During a prospective employee meet-up, it's significant for you to not rule the discussion. Truly, you have to respond to the competitor's inquiries and clarify the subtleties of the activity, however not to the detriment of becoming acquainted with the up-and-comer. Questioners ought to invest substantially more energy tuning in than they spend talking, said Sue Meisinger, SPHR, JD. Time and again a questioner will get so consumed in portraying the organization and the activity that they leave too brief period for tuning in to and finding out about the up-and-comer. What to do: Ensure your inquiries questions are open-finished and give competitors an opportunity to extend. In case you're just posing yes or no inquiries, you'll get almost no understanding about what their identity is. For Meisinger, she prefers her inquiries to be intriguing. I got a kick out of the chance to request that applicants share with me a period in their profession when they were the focal point of some discussion, she said. What was the issue and how could they handle it? I pose the inquiry on the grounds that no activity is without discussion and stress, and I like to get a feeling of how individuals approach those circumstances. Dont spend the whole #jobinterview talking. Tune in also. #HRpro @suemeisinger. Snap To Tweet 3. Try not to let recruiting inclination impact you Recruiting predisposition is genuine. While it isn't in every case plainly about race, ethnicity, sex, or sexual direction, individuals will in general kindness recruiting competitors who are like them. This prompts you ignoring incredible ability except if you intentionally attempt to hold predispositions under tight restraints. On the off chance that the competitor and the employing administrator have the equivalent institute of matriculation or are from a similar town, there's a moment association between them, said Heather Huhman, author and leader of Come Recommended. Seeing similitudes in up-and-comers can be risky if those characteristics aren't relevant to the position. You could wind up employing somebody who isn't the best choice. What to do: Hear apprehensions on your top up-and-comer decisions. On the off chance that you use pre-recorded single direction video interviews, share the recordings with another colleague, at that point approach them for input. At whatever point I'm recruiting, I have a believed individual I go to, said Huhman. In the event that her impression of the up-and-comers line up with mine, I know there's to a lesser extent an opportunity that my own inclinations are impacting my choices. It likewise helps in the event that you have a reasonable, target models to assess applicants. That can keep you and other employing colleagues centered when evaluating work searchers during a meeting. No one's ideal. The manufacturing process uses a dandy roll to impress the chain lines pattern into the paper. Its very sophisticated and unique, butAvoid it if your resume has got many dark-colored elements that require a lot of ink or if you dont have a top-notch printer at hand.Laid paper, amongst all types of resume paper textures, is most likely to bring about printing errors.Laid Resume Paper Pros and ConsPROSCONSSophisticated and uniqueProne to printing errorsVery pleasant to the touchOne of the most expensive paper texture types5Resume Paper by Cotton ContentComparisonHeres the twistAll of the above comparisons could well be meaningless. Time to learn the real game-changer:Cotton content.Possibly the single most important feature of fine paper. Cotton content influences:Paper durabilityColor richness and depthPaper qualitycotton paper, as opposed to standard wood pulp paperis soft yet crisp. And, if you need more arguments in favor of cotton resume paperits extremely sustainable environmentally.Have a look at the below comparison of 100% vs. 0% cotton resume paper:Image: (Left) 100% vs. (Right) 0% cotton resume paperAs I mentioned earlier on, cotton content gives paper a little bit of texture. Only 32% respondents would accept these candidates, with another 32% automatically rejecting them.Creative resume on white paper was the worst of the three: 42% instant rejections. While ivory paper was not included in the study, the message is clear: white paper is the safest choice, unconventional resume paper color will harm your chances of landing a job.Another interesting study has shown that more than 1 in 5 recruiters would reject a candidate whose resume was printed on decorative paper without batting an eyelash. In other wordsTextured, business paper is fine for a resume. Artistic decorative paper will sabotage your job-seeking efforts.Oh, and just in case you were wondering...7Whats the Best Resume Paper Size? The standard 8.5 x 11in. Career Geek is the official blog partner of National Careers Week 2015. Visit NCW site. See all posts for NCW2015 on Career Geek. A resume if like your file, one which you carry for life. But creative resume designs put some spice back into life! In this post I will list some resume designs that Ive come to like. Dont just copy these creative resume designs, but rather gain inspiration from them. 1.  The non-conformist I love one of these creative resume designs by  Syril Bobadilla. Its non-conformist to the tradition and if this was put in front of the recruiter, it would surely make their heads turn twice! In some industries creative resumes wont sell, but in those that you can have them, it should be something simple yet creative. Easy on the eye and yet full of details a recruiter would like to know. 2. Detailed yet Minimalist I am a big of of minimalism. And although one can argue this is not a minimalist resume, you really should see the number of pages it takes for one to pack in all the details! Compare that to this creative resume design by  Gianina Santiago  and suddenly you see that a resume design can be minimalist yet drive home the detailed points. 3.  Uniquely Practical Cut-away This resume design by  Georgina Bousia  is great! And it is quite practical to have a cut-away business card that the recruiter can takeaway.   Again, the design is militaristic and by adding the cutaway section at top, this creative resume is definitely going to stick in ones mind. Wish I did something like this! 4.  Creative but Professional Resume If you think, you cannot carry off the colours in some of these creative resume designs, I can understand. Id be worried too for some of them ?? But this resume by Simplicity Wanted, is professional yet creative. I like it, and I will certainly try it because you can download this template for $3.00 from the website. 5.  Multi Colour Creative Resume Designs Once we did the single colour design, ofcourse I had to look for some multi colour creative resumes. And best of all, you can download it for free (as a creative resume template). This design is multi coloured and has 2 columns. It allows for more details to fit around the resume. If you notice, this resume design does not have charts or venn diagrams, the designer,  Jonny Evans  is to be credited for that.   If you liked these and have any comments, do comment below.
